This sumptuous hand-pulled Chine-collé photogravure plate by American photographer Edward Steichen depicts the great French sculptor Auguste Rodin. (1840-1917) Rodin is shown standing and silhouetted against his white marble sculpture Monument to Victor Hugo. (carved for the 1901 French Salon)
Photographed in 1901 by Steichen, (the title is „Rodin“ MDCCCCI) this rare gravure would be considered a first state for the image, and it was subsequently published in the second issue of Camera Work by Alfred Stieglitz in 1903.
Excellent: there are some faint foxing marks on outer support that do not intrude into image. Please inspect both photographs with listing.
image size: 19.1 x 14.4 cm
