A steam shovel at right prepares to drop a load of dirt into a horse-drawn cart while other carts wait their turn at a construction site in New York City. This is one of the urban views of New York taken by Alfred Stieglitz (1865-1946) included as a plate in Camera Work XXXVI and published in 1911. This vintage Japan tissue, hand-pulled photogravure is tipped along the left margin to a sheet of Enfield watermarked 1887 laid paper.
