Before Charles Fondu (d. 1912) of Vilvoorde in Belgium made a name for himself as a manufacturer of automobiles from 1906-12, he was an amateur photographer whose work won prizes including at least one competition sponsored by the Brussels-based photographic journal Sentiment D’Art en Photographie. This dramatic silhouette study of a sailboat heading towards open water at sunset was originally titled Soleil Couchant, and was published as a large plate halftone included in the important publication: L’Art Photographique which appeared for only one year between 1899-1900.

Condition: Good, but with issues.
Circular L’ART PHOTOGRAPHIQUE blindstamp present at lower right corner of image and plate; image is perfect (printed on thinner plate paper) but there is heavy staining to lower margin along with staining to other margins and losses and bumping to corners; and closed tears and foxing to plate.
