Two figures rest against a fence at foreground left as they gaze over a river with an unknown city in the background in this brooding landscape titled "Feierabend", or German for the end of the work day. Taken by English photographer Reverend F.C. Lambert, this is a very fine hand-pulled, Chine-collé photogravure printed in 1897 and included in the important German publication Die Kunst in der Photographie. The Rev. Lambert, a member of the British Linked Ring Brotherhood, went by his pseudonym "Prelate" with the group, and was a well published author. Early in his career he wrote profiles on photographers Lydell Sawyer and B. Gay Wilkinson in the important publication Sun Artists and authored the book Photography for Novices in 1909.
