With apologies to English poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson's ballad poem of the same name from 1833, the young woman imprisoned on the fictional island of Shalott in the medieval days of King Arthur is recast here as a portrait by American pictorial photographer Frank Eugene. (1865-1936) Dating to about 1900, his profile view titled Lady of Shalott shows his vigorous use of an etching needle on the lower part of the negative.
This vintage hand-pulled photogravure was printed on Japan tissue and appeared in Camera Work XXV published in January, 1909. The photograph is corner glued to a thicker sheet of hand-made, laid Japan paper which in turn is corner glued on left margin to a sheet of 1887 watermarked Enfield laid paper.
Very slight crease to center of Japan paper and Enfield paper supports; left marginal loss (6.5 x 1.0 at widest) to Enfield support; two small linen tape surface losses to upper margin of Enfield support verso. Please inspect both photographs with listing. (please email if you require additional photos)
