A profile pictorial portrait of a woman of African descent is the subject matter for the French photographer Arthur Da Cunha. (b. Brazil: 1864-1913?) The photo originally dates to 1896, when Da Cunha exhibited the work titled Etude (Study) as a carbon print at the Paris Salon sponsored by the Photo Club de Paris.
Later titled Portrait à L'atelier, this photograph was published as a large plate halftone included in the important publication: L’Art Photographique which appeared for only one year between 1899-1900.

Circular L’ART PHOTOGRAPHIQUE blindstamp present at lower right corner of image and plate; thinner coated paper stock; losses to all corners with staining mostly to lower margin along with several large closed tears.
