Taken in Cuba, a man fills a clay jug with water using a rotary hand pump. Boston Camera Club member Horace Latimer (1860-1931) recorded the market scene while visiting the island in 1901.
This absolutely stunning vintage print in varying shades of black and gray was printed as a hand-pulled photogravure included with the October, 1902 issue of Camera Notes. (vol. 6 no. 2) At the time, this groundbreaking journal of photography was the organ of The New York Camera Club. This was the first issue not edited by Alfred Stieglitz who went on to found the American Photo-Secession later that year.
This print has become separated from the original journal backing support. Adhesive remnants on verso with title and attribution in unknown hand in graphite. Please inspect photograph with listing. (please email if you require additional photos)
